Cat Trianing Tips - Kitty Litter Training
The key to training your cat to use the litter box is simple, be patient and persistent. You need to understand that cats learn form experience, good experience. If the experience is good they will try it again. Bad experiences will only frustrate your cat and even cause rebellion.
What are considered bad experiences?
1. I've heard of pet owners trying some crazy way's to help their cats understand what's bad. For instance, the cat scratches at your furniture or urinates in your shoes. Some pet owners will take their cat over to the shoe afterwards to show them the obnoxious behavior and then try to discipline at the same time showing them the Litter box (hoping they understand this is the proper place to urinate). This type of training, is not practical, it frustrates the cat who really doesn't understand what is going on and eventually turns them off to the Litter box completely. The Litter box then becomes their enemy.
2. Spoiling your cat by giving in. If your cat is continually interrupting your sleep with constant meowing because they want something. If you tend to give into them by allowing them that something. You enforce their behavior, and confirm to them that this is how they need to communicate to you if they need something. Lesson, don't give into un-acceptable behavior.
Training tips that help:
1. First, stay away from reprimands, this normally will back fire. Your cat will retaliate by continuing the bad behavior especially when you're not around.
2. If you know your cat, one thing is sure, their digestive system is regular. A good way to help you train your cat to use the kitty litter is to plan ahead. When you know it's time for them to go, take them and your self into a room with a door, you cat will have no choice but to use the litter box, once he's finished praise your cat. Then give them a reward like a new toy or a snack. Do this for a week or so.
3. Like stated above, you can use rewards to encourage your cat to use the kitty litter. Your rewards should be food or toy's that your cat likes.
4. Another method to keep your cats away from your shoes and to use the kitty litter is put things in or near your shoes that your cat does not like. For instance, double sided sticky tape can be used. Place some inside and around your shoes. Some cats do not like this type of tape and will stay away from your shoes.
These are only a few suggestions that can help you train your cat to use the kitty litter or help with training. A little side note, some cats misbehave due to a lack of attention. Make sure you give your pet at least 30 minutes a day of attention. This should be a minimum.
