Training your dog to sit

Teaching your pet dog to sit is an easy task which should be done by all pet owners. When properly taught, the sit command can keep your dog out of trouble as well as treat possible dominance problems. Below are two sets of training technique, puppies and older dogs.

Training puppies:

When training puppies the sit command, you should spend 5 or 6 minutes at a time. Some dog’s attention span is pretty short so don't get discouraged. First begin by placing your hand next to their nose and say his name. Now that you have your pet’s attention, say the word “sit” and move your hand up along the puppies head. The puppy will raise his head up and begin to sit naturally. When he sits say “Good” and the dogs name. When your puppy has been sitting few seconds say “up” to release him from the sit position. Now repeat… and Repeat. After a few times you will notice that the he will sit without you using your hand. TIP: Do not push your pet’s behind down with your hand.

Older Dogs:

When training older dogs, the steps above will work just the same but you will probably need to include a treat in your hand. The treat’s starting point should be next to your dog’s nose, and move it slightly above the dogs head. Like training the puppies, your pets head should go back and the dog should sit naturally. If you’re having a hard time getting them to sit, even with the treat, try using a leash to help push the dog back into the sit position.
