Money Woes lead to "Ruff" times

5-15-08

The strain of tightening household budgets has hit man's best friend, as more New Yorkers are seeking help -- including foster parents -- for their pets.

Many New York City pet rescue and foster care services say that in the last three to six months there has been a flood of requests from pet owners.

"We're getting a lot more people who have lost their jobs, become homeless or are evicted from apartments," said Joyce Friedman, co-coordinator of Safety Net, a city-sponsored program that helps financially struggling pet owners.

Iraq dog finds a friend in a US Marine

2-29-08

With a wag of its tail and a colorful US Marines bandanna around its neck, this dog bounded into the San Diego’s Lindbergh Field airport on Friday, oblivious to the reporters and cameras present there. The clean environs of the airport were a far cry from the time when it lived in war-torn Iraq and fed on sraps.US Marine Major Brian Dennis, 36, spotted this German shepherd-border collie mix last October. Major Dennis was part of the military team building infrastructure along the Syria-Iraq border and training Iraqi forces he spotted the grey and white dog in Iraq's Anbar province while he was on patrol duty and named it Nubs after learning that someone cut the ears off believing it would make the dog more aggressive and alert. Within weeks, Nubs was greeting Major Dennis during routine patrol stops along border communities. The Marines fed him bits of their food and by November, Major Dennis and his unit were keeping an eye out for the dog, which routinely chased their Hummers when they departed.

Nearly 33 percent of pet owners said they've had a bad experience boarding a pet, and more then 12 percent said they had more then one bad experience, according to a poll of 1,133 pet owners

Man gets 2 years in jail for dog’s death

1-23-08

Derick Phanord of Brentwood Long Island was sentenced to 2 years in prison for killing his pet pit bull. Derick took his pet dog, tied it against a tree near his home and proceeded to pour gas all over the dog and then light it on fire with his cigarette. The judge sentenced him to the maximum of 2 years in prison for animal cruelty.

Derick entered the court room yesterday with his head down and read a statement explaining how sorry he was and how he currently is living with guilt for killing his dog.

Derick explained that his pit bull attacked a puppy pit bull by grabbing it by the neck. Derick threw bleach on his pit bull and slammed a shovel on the ground to make the dog stop. Afterwards he took his dog to a near by woods and lit him on fire. Two day’s later a neighbor found the dog and called 911. After being burned over 60 % of his body and having several surgeries, the dog died a few day’s later.

Bulldog makes come back to top 10 list

1-18-08

For the first time in 72 years, the Bulldog has now made it to the top 10 most popular dogs in the nation.

The bulldog is both docile and adaptive, and can thrive in small or large homes,” the AKC said yesterday. “It’s an excellent all around family pet.” The thickset canine, with its low-swung body, sagging snout and wide shoulders, last made the Top 10 list in 1935, when it again placed 10th. With the bulldog’s ascent, the miniature Schnauzer dropped off the list. The beagle is the only breed that has consistently been included on the Top 10 chart since 1915, coming in fifth place last year. The poodle and dachshund, who each have enjoyed the top spot in Manhattan (2005 and 2006 for the poodle; 2004 for the dachshund) now share a tie in the borough for third place, ousted by the Labrador Retriever who has been #1 for the last 17 years.

Pet's acting Naughty for Christmas

12-28-07

Ho, ho, uh-oh! One of my earliest holiday memories is of our cat climbing the Christmas tree, knocking ornaments off all the way.

The holiday season offers ample opportunity for pets to show their naughty side, leaving some owners to scramble to save the tree, the trimmings or the turkey.

Retired schoolteacher Joanne Nash of Los Altos, Calif., used to decorate her tree with clay-bake ornaments made from flour, salt and water. I had made some myself, bought some, and had some that my students had made, she says. Unfortunately for Nash, her Dalmatians thought the ornaments were delicious dog treats, placed on the tree just for them.

Stealthy Dalmatians managed to snatch them one by one when we werent in the room with the tree, Nash recalls. We replaced the consumed ones with a few more the next year, but some invisible dog stole those too, and we havent had any clay-bake ornaments since.

So Nash has adapted her holiday dcor to the realities of life with dogs. Because she breeds Dalmatians and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, theres often a puppy or two in the house during the holidays. Although her high ceilings would permit a large tree, she and her husband limit themselves to a smaller one that can be placed atop an old wooden chest, out of reach of curious puppies.

钓Even so, she says, we dont do much decorating of the lower branches.

Michael Vick get 23 months in prison

12-11-07

Michael Vick has been sentenced to 23 months in prison yesterday. The U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson Said he felt Vick really wasnt sorry for his part and Vicks early entrance into Prison wasnt accounted for. Part of Michael Vick sentencing will include an animal sensitivity training which will be onsite.

Vick faces a maximum of five years in prison. Hudson is not bound by sentencing guidelines that suggest a year to 18 months, or prosecutors' recommendation. Hudson already has sentenced two of Vick's co-defendants to 18 months and 21 months--slightly more than prosecutors recommended, but still within the guidelines.

Legal experts said Hudson's willingness to stick to the guidelines in those cases is a positive sign for Vick, but by no means a guarantee he will get similar treatment because so many factors could work against him.
